James. G. Slaughter Jr.  

Chairman of the Board, CEO Emeritus, S&B

James G. Slaughter, Jr., is Chairman of the Board and CEO Emeritus of S&B Engineers and Constructors, Ltd., and son of co-founder, James G. Slaughter, Sr.  Mr. Slaughter is a native of Houston.  He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston in 1970 and attended graduate school at the University of Toledo as well as the Program for Management Development (PMD) at Harvard Business School.


Mr. Slaughter has spent his entire career at S&B, filling both engineering and construction positions.  He is a current member of the National Academy of Construction; past member of the Construction Industry Institute (CII) Executive Committee and past President of the Houston Area Contractors’ Safety Council.  He has been very active in the CII, serving in the following roles: 


  • Member of the Executive Committee

  • Member of the Board of Advisors

  • Twice Chairman of CII’s Strategic Planning Committee

  • Chairman of the Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI) research team

  • Chairman of the Alignment research team

  • Productivity Metrics Champion

  • Member of the Nomination Committee


Mr. Slaughter is the recipient of the CII’s two highest awards; the Caroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence (2010) for significant achievements in improving the engineering and construction industry and the Richard L. Tucker Leadership & Service Award (2008) for significant contribution to the advancement of the CII mission and to the success of CII as an organization. Mr. Slaughter also received the National Academy of Construction's Ted C. Kennedy Award (2015) for commitment to improving all aspects of the construction industry and driving positive change in the most critical areas - safety, workforce development and productivity.


Mr. Slaughter’s involvement with the National Academy of Construction has been:

  • Chairman of Dispute Avoidance Committee

  • Member Safety Committee

  • Chairman of Strategic Planning Committee

  • Co-founder and core member of the National Construction Forum

Most recently, Mr. Slaughter was awarded the ECC Achievement Award at the 48th Annual ECC Conference in September, 2016. The ECC Achievement Award was originally introduced to the industry in 1988 as the ECC Division Award, and has been honoring recipients who exhibited the most well-rounded aspects of a true industry leader. This prestigious award honors industry professionals who are:

  • Leaders with integrity

  • Professionals who have had a lasting and positive impact on the competitive face of business

  • Candidates who possess stature among their industry peers.


Perhaps Mr. Slaughter’s greatest contribution to the industry is his role as a pioneer in “zero accidents” safety since 1987.  S&B has been the industry leader in safety the last 20+ years, and Mr. Slaughter has freely shared S&B processes with all that were interested. S&B has also been on the forefront of craft training, offering skills upgrade training to all craft employees and has developed a program specifically designed to bring women into construction.
